Rioja's cool upland heartland — classic Tempranillo from clay-limestone soils
Rioja Alta is the highest and coolest sub-zone of Spain's most famous wine region, producing the classic, age-worthy Riojas that built the DOCa's international reputation. Centred on Haro — home to the highest concentration of Bodegas Gran Reserva in the world — the zone's clay-limestone soils, Atlantic-influenced climate, and long winemaking tradition create Tempranillo of elegance, structure, and extraordinary longevity. This is the Rioja of La Rioja Alta S.A., López de Heredia, and CVNE — names synonymous with benchmark Spanish red wine.
Fly into Bilbao (BIO) — 1h drive to Haro. Logroño (DOCa capital) is 45 min from Haro, with direct rail from Madrid (3h) and Bilbao (2h30). Vitoria-Gasteiz airport (VIT) is also nearby.
Car recommended for winery visits. Haro is walkable — Barrio de la Estación has 7 bodegas within 500m. Local buses connect Haro–Logroño–Briones. Guided wine tours depart from Logroño and Bilbao.
Rioja cuisine is hearty and meat-forward — chuletillas al sarmiento (lamb chops grilled over vine shoots), patatas a la riojana (spiced potato stew with chorizo), pimientos rellenos (stuffed peppers). Haro's pintxos bars in the old town are outstanding. Laguardia has excellent restaurants for the Marqués de Riscal hotel guests and beyond.
Continental with Atlantic influence — cooler and wetter than Rioja Baja. Cool nights preserve acidity. Frost risk in spring. Harvest late September–early October. Longer hangtime builds complexity.
