Going to Wachau Gourmet Festival?

A five-day celebration pairing Wachau wines with international guest chefs in the UNESCO-listed Danube valley. Events take place at vineyards, historic abbeys, and restaurants along the Wachau, with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling the stars. The festival combines Austrian culinary precision with breathtaking Danube scenery.

Your trip blueprint

1
Arrive a day early
Settle in and visit a local producer before the crowds arrive — fly into Vienna International Airport (VIE).
2
Festival (7 days)
Last week of April to early May. Best for foodies and wine-enthusiasts.
3
Extend into the region (2 days)
Wachau has 70 mapped wineries — add 2 days to explore at your own pace.
Insider tip

Book the abbey dinners 6-8 weeks ahead—these intimate events with renowned chefs sell out immediately and offer far better producer access than public tastings. Request riverside vineyard locations specifically; the terraced Loiben and Spitz sites offer unmatched Danube views while sipping Riesling.

About Wachau

The Wachau is one of Europe's most dramatically beautiful wine regions — a narrow, winding stretch of the Danube River 75km west of Vienna, flanked by steep granite terraces that have been cultivated since Roman times. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it produces Austria's most celebrated Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, with the unique Wachau classification system (Steinfeder, Federspiel, Smaragd) defining wine styles by body and ripeness.
