Going to Vinea Wachau?

The annual presentation of the Vinea Wachau producers' association, held in the baroque Stift Dürnstein on the Danube. Over 200 wines from the Wachau's top producers are available for tasting, categorised into Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd quality tiers. A focused, quality-driven tasting in a stunning riverside setting.

Your trip blueprint

1
Arrive a day early
Settle in and visit a local producer before the crowds arrive — fly into Vienna International Airport (VIE).
2
Festival (3 days)
Mid-May. Best for wine-enthusiasts and collectors.
3
Extend into the region (2 days)
Wachau has 70 mapped wineries — add 2 days to explore at your own pace.
Insider tip

Skip the general tasting and book a private appointment with Domäne Wachau or Emmerich Knoll directly beforehand—they'll reserve their top Smaragd Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners. The Steinfeder category (lighter wines) is often overlooked but represents exceptional value and food-pairing versatility.

About Wachau

The Wachau is one of Europe's most dramatically beautiful wine regions — a narrow, winding stretch of the Danube River 75km west of Vienna, flanked by steep granite terraces that have been cultivated since Roman times. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it produces Austria's most celebrated Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, with the unique Wachau classification system (Steinfeder, Federspiel, Smaragd) defining wine styles by body and ripeness.
