Rioja is Spain's most celebrated wine region — and its most accessible for visitors. Stretching along the Ebro River in northern Spain, Rioja is defined by the oak aging of its Tempranillo-dominant reds: Crianza (2 years), Reserva (3 years), and Gran Reserva (5+ years). The resulting wines range from fresh, aromatic Crianza to complex, earthy Gran Reservas capable of decades of development. The region divides into three subzones — Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental — each producing distinct styles from the same core grapes.

The Wines of Rioja

Rioja Crianza

Minimum 2 years aging (1 in oak). Fresh, approachable, with red fruit and vanilla. The everyday Rioja that works beautifully with Spanish food. Excellent value.

Rioja Reserva

Minimum 3 years aging (1 year in oak). More structure and complexity. Often the best QPR in Rioja — many outstanding Reservas under €20. The sweet spot for most visitors.

Rioja Gran Reserva

Minimum 5 years aging (2 in oak). Only made in the best vintages. Earthy, tertiary complexity — leather, tobacco, dried fruit — with firm structure. The pinnacle of traditional Rioja.

White Rioja

Viura-based whites, increasingly popular in modern expressions. Aged in oak, they develop nutty, oxidative complexity. López de Heredia's Viña Tondonia Blanco is the benchmark.

Haro: The Wine Capital of Rioja

Haro is the traditional wine capital of Rioja Alta — a compact, walkable town with the famous Barrio de la Estación (Station Quarter) where six historic bodegas cluster around the old railway station. López de Heredia, CVNE, La Rioja Alta, and Muga are all within walking distance of each other. An afternoon visiting the Barrio de la Estación, followed by tapas on Calle Lucrecia Arana, is quintessential Rioja.

The Vendimia (Harvest) Festival

The Battle of Wine (Batalla del Vino) takes place in Haro every June 29th — participants drench each other in red wine in a centuries-old tradition. The Rioja wine harvest begins in late September, when villages across the region hold vendimia festivals with grape treading, music, and bodegas opening their doors. This is the most atmospheric time to visit.

Rioja vs Ribera del Duero: Understanding Spanish Red Wine

Rioja and Ribera del Duero are Spain's two greatest red wine regions, both based on Tempranillo (called Tinto Fino or Tinta del País in Ribera). Rioja emphasises oak and elegance; Ribera tends toward richer, more concentrated styles. Many wine visitors combine both on a northern Spain road trip — the regions are about 2 hours apart.
